Employee burnout has become a matter of concern for many businesses. While the drop in workplace productivity is troublesome, the other bigger issues caused by employee burnout include the impact on health and wellbeing, leading to higher healthcare costs and other financial consequences.

Simply put, burnout is a condition causing physical and emotional fatigue induced by prolonged stress. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines burnout as – 

Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions:

  • feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
  • increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and
  • reduced professional efficacy.”

Thanks to workplace wellness programs, it has become easier to identify and prevent employee burnout. While a few companies might still stick to the conventional methods to mitigate burnout, many others have started implementing innovative corporate wellness technology in their programs.

Indeed surveyed 1,500 U.S. workers of different working levels, age groups, and industries to study employee burnout. According to the report, 67% of respondents believed that burnout has worsened since the pandemic had begun. While 43% of workers experienced burnout in the pre-COVID period, 52% experienced the same during the pandemic.

The Millennial group was the most affected with almost 53% of them already burned out even before the pandemic started, and 59% of them were suffering during the study period. On the other hand, only 48% of Gen Z workers had feelings of burnout before COVID, which increased to 58% during the pandemic.

Surprisingly, 38% of employees who were working virtually were more likely to experience burnout compared to 28% who worked on-site. Almost 27% of the respondents said they were unable to unplug from work even after working hours, which disturbed their work-life balance. While 33% said the feelings of burnout during the pandemic were caused due to financial stress, 25% said health concerns also caused stress leading to burnout.

To help employees overcome these issues, employers are looking to implement effective tools to combat workplace burnout. Advancing corporate wellness technology has been deemed to be one of the best tools to combat and curb burnout. However, a couple of studies reveal that digital technology itself could be a source of workplace burnout, and so, many employers are hesitating to incorporate workplace wellness technology as a strategy to prevent employee burnout.

A well-known holistic wellness provider conducted a study to understand how employers perceive the idea of using corporate wellness technology to prevent burnout. Through a newsletter poll, a group of 130 HR and wellness professionals was questioned if they would use technology to curb employee burnout. While 76% said they would use corporate wellness technology as a solution to prevent burnout, 24% were reluctant about it.

How Corporate Wellness Technology Can Prevent Burnout?

Experts suggest that the asymptomatic nature of burnout often has employees missing the signs until it becomes severe. So, the earlier it is caught, the better and easier it will be to treat. To start with, most employees are not aware of the signs to look out for, analyze the psychological or physical attributes, or access the tools that can indicate burnout.

Employee wellness programs incorporated with growing digital technology allow identifying various health and wellbeing issues, including high heart rate. low oxygen levels, lesser social communication, etc. Identifying such real-time behaviors allows personalizing employee wellness programs to help with stress management and focus on other holistic wellbeing dimensions. Similarly, implementing digital technology to identify burnout behavior, track burnout metrics, and provide tips to overcome it can help employees stay calm and relaxed at work.

Incorporating the right corporate wellness technology can help take over certain jobs with the help of AI, especially the ones that are monotonous and repetitive. By doing so, employees can take time off their time-consuming tasks and focus on other productive ones, giving them a sense of accomplishment and saving time, thus preventing burnout.

Like other stress prevention apps, corporate wellness apps can also be designed to mitigate burnout. Stress management activities and wellness challenges offered through the employee wellbeing programs can boost employee engagement and reflect healthy lifestyle habits, thus curbing burnout.

Although contradictory, technology is known to be a key cause of burnout, and also an effective way to prevent burnout. However, by implementing the right corporate wellness technology to the employee wellness programs, it can become an integral part of our everyday lives, helping us lead a healthy and wholesome life. So, the key lies in choosing the right technology, wellbeing tools, and strategies.
