According to a KSDK report, almost 4 million Americans had quit their jobs in September 2021, and the main reason for this was the massive shift in working structure caused by the pandemic. And since so many employees quit their jobs, a high number of jobs are available.

With many options available, employees are choosing the right organization that offers a better work-life balance and other benefits. Almost 42% of employees cited better work-life balance as the main reason to quit their jobs, irrespective of the pay scale change.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed employee health and wellbeing priorities. Financial and mental wellbeing are top priorities now, followed by behavioral assessments, health screenings, and work-life balance. So, to have a competitive edge in the corporate market, the workplace culture must focus on the current trends and wellbeing priorities. And one of the best strategies to appeal to prospective candidates is by focusing on employee wellbeing and creating a great Employee Value Proposition (EVP).

A toxic workplace culture impacts employee mental health and productivity. According to an HBR study, many Gen Z employees are quitting their jobs due to mental health issues. Also, Millennials, along with Gen Z workers, are leaving their jobs because of mental wellbeing and work-life balance issues, compared to other generations.

Although pandemic-induced stress has impacted employee mental health and overall wellbeing, the workplace culture plays a major role in influencing the shift. And so, organizations must support a transparent workplace culture that makes it easy for the workforce to discuss their concerns openly and seek help. In addition to building a healthy workplace culture to reduce stress, employers must also focus on occupational health and safety programs to reduce any workplace injuries.

The managers and leaders must be trained to initiate and navigate discussions with the employees on a wide array of health and wellbeing topics. They must also be trained to seek genuine feedback from the workforce that can improve the culture, build trust, and enhance the employee-employer relationship. HR professionals can also collect information about the personal and occupational goals of the candidates during interviews to chalk out actionable plans to help them achieve it.

Acknowledge the Pandemic-Related Stress

Studies show how the pandemic has impacted employee health and wellbeing. Almost one in five workers are finding it hard to cope with pandemic-related stress. And so, to recruit the best candidates, companies must empathize with their struggles and ongoing changes.

Depending on the employee’s concerns, employers can offer flexible working schedules, 4-day work week, or full-time remote work options to convey their personal lives mean a lot to the company. Identify their other concerns like caregiving responsibilities, educational loans, and likewise, to demonstrate sensitivity towards employee struggles. Provide employee wellness programs and health screenings, including annual flu shots, preventative exams, and assessments. Most importantly, ensure the employees have a work-life balance.

Offer Employee Mental Health Training

Irrespective of being work-related or not, taking care of employee mental health lays a strong foundation for their engagement, productivity, and overall wellbeing. According to a CDC report, almost half of the employees with depression do not seek treatment or help for their condition, thus, paving the way for higher absenteeism and presenteeism rates. While the social stigma around mental health issues is one of the key reasons for this hesitance, many are not aware of the adverse effects of poor mental health.

Employers must support employee mental health by providing proactive training, health coaching, and holistic wellness programs. These wellness programs and modules must focus on stress management and everyday wellbeing. When these mental health and wellbeing aspects are worked upon, it improves workplace culture, reduces conflicts at work, boosts employee engagement, and enhances productivity. When the company genuinely works on addressing and improving employee health and wellbeing, it makes recruiting easier.

Investing in DEI Can Make a Huge Difference

Diversity, equity, and inclusion have set the benchmark to plan the latest workplace wellbeing strategies. In short, these factors have become essential for employee mental health and workplace wellbeing. An SHRM report revealed that LGBTQ+, Black, and Latinx employees cited mental health reasons as the main cause for quitting their jobs. 

Employers must create a workplace culture that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition to training the leaders, managers, and the entire workforce about diversity, the leaders must be open to seeking feedback from the employees and address any concerns, without being biased. Also, the employee wellness programs must address sensitive issues like violence, bias, or abuse based on gender, race, or cultural background. Furthermore, employee mentorship programs can help in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
